New Delhi: Four Indian students were among several people injured in a knife attack at a university hostel in Ufa in Russia’s Republic of Bashkortostan on Saturday, the Indian Embassy in Moscow said, adding that officials are being sent to assist the victims.

The attack took place in the sports hall of a foreign students’ dormitory linked to the State Medical University in Ufa, according to Russian media reports. According to preliminary information, a knife-wielding teenager entered the premises and stabbed multiple students.

Two policemen also attacked

“An unfortunate incident of attack has occurred in Ufa. Several persons including four Indian students have been injured. The Embassy is in touch with the authorities and the officials from the Consulate in Kazan are on their way to Ufa to provide assistance to the injured students,” the embassy said in a post on X.

Russian interior ministry spokesperson Major General Irina Volk said the attacker resisted arrest, during which two police officers were stabbed. The suspect also inflicted injuries on himself, according to local outlet RTVI.

Local media reports said at least eight people were injured in the incident. Authorities have not yet officially disclosed the identities or nationalities of all the victims.

Injured under medical care

Some Telegram channels reported there may have been two attackers. One suspect, identified as a 15-year-old, has been admitted to a children’s hospital in serious condition. Injured students and police personnel are being treated at a local clinical hospital.

Russian universities host a large number of Indian medical students each year.
