New Delhi: Former Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah on Sunday formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party days after quitting Congress ahead of the crucial Assembly elections in the state. Borah, who spent over three decades in Congress, switched sides in the presence of state BJP president Dilip Saikia. Alongside him, former Congress worker Sanju Bora also joined the BJP.
His resignation earlier this week had sparked intense political chatter in Assam. Although Borah had submitted his resignation, the Congress high command had not accepted it. Senior leaders visited his residence to persuade him to reconsider and Rahul Gandhi also spoke to him. Borah had initially sought time to rethink his decision but the situation moved quickly after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited his home and announced that he would join the BJP on February 22.
