Football round-up: Leeds United edge West Ham 2-1, Late Athekame strike rescues Milan from Pisa upset

New Delhi: Leeds United beat West Ham 2-1 at Elland Road to win their third game of the Premier League season with early first-half goals from Brenden Aaronson and Joe Rodon.

Mateus Fernandes scored a late goal for the Hammers, leaving new manager Nuno Espirito Santo still looking for a first victory since taking over the club. Leeds moved to 13th position in the standings while West Ham remain in the relegation zone.

Leeds took the lead in the third minute of the match with their first attack as Aaronson scored from close range. The visitors almost levelled in the 10th minute as Jarrod Bowen latched onto a loose header with a sensational bicycle kick, which forced Lucas Perri into a sharp save.

The hosts made it 2-0 as Joe Roden netted in the 15th minute of the match from Sean Longstaff’s corner. West Ham looked for an opening goal with the introduction of Callum Wilson, and Lucas Paqueta’s strike was ruled offside in the 34th minute after a VAR check.

In the final minute, Fernandes scored from Bowen’s in-swinging cross into the bottom corner, but only four minutes were added in the stoppage time, which didn’t offer the visitors any chance to score a late equaliser.

West Ham have made their worst start since 1973-74 as Leeds United registered their first win in four league matches.

“It’s a simple explanation. We didn’t deal with the problems. We didn’t deal with many things. We have to work hard and be much better. I feel the players want to, but they switch off in many moments,” West Ham head coach Nuno said.

AC Milan 2-2 Pisa

AC Milan secured a last-minute 2-2 draw at home against struggling Pisa. Zachary Athekame’s late strike rescued a point for the Serie A toppers. The hosts were heading for an embarrassing loss when substitute Athekame scored from a long-range shot that got in during stoppage time.

Milan remain at the top of the table with 17 points, two points ahead of Inter Milan, Napoli and AS Roma. Rafael Leao scored the opening goal of the match in the seventh minute

It took just seven minutes for Milan to break the deadlock, as Rafael Leao drifted to the edge of the box and fired a low shot into the net. Pisa’s Juan Cuadrado converted from the spot in the 60th minute to bring the sides level, after a foul from Koni De Winte inside the box.

M’Bala Nazola netted the second goal for the visitors in the 86th minute of the match to stun San Siro. However, Athekame’s late goal brought some relief for Milan, leaving the two clubs to share the points.
