Flood flows lash Krishna projects from Almatti to Srisailam, Nagarjuna Sagar too begins to swell

Heavy flood inflows are surging through the Krishna basin, with Srisailam, Jurala, and Nagarjuna Sagar reservoirs filling rapidly. Hydropower generation is underway, and outflows are rising.

Upstream and downstream projects are witnessing significant inflows, with more rain expected this week.

Hyderabad: A massive surge of floodwaters is pounding the Krishna river basin, with the Srisailam, Jurala and Tungabhadra projects witnessing heavy inflows. Even the Nagarjuna Sagar Project has begun receiving floodwaters, marking a strong start to the new water year.

The Srisailam reservoir, the key storage point upstream of Nagarjuna Sagar, is receiving inflows of 1.75 lakh cusecs. With a flood cushion of about 35 TMC, officials expect it to be filled within the next 48 hours. Hydropower generation is currently underway at both the right and left bank stations, and 67,000 cusecs are being released downstream. The reservoir, which has a gross capacity of 215.81 TMC, is now holding 173.47 TMC.

At the Priyadarshini Jurala Project, inflows have touched 1.20 lakh cusecs, while 1.24 lakh cusecs are being discharged downstream, maintaining a high outflow rate. The Tungabhadra reservoir too is witnessing a surge, receiving 72,000 cusecs and discharging 65,000 cusecs through its gates and turbines.

The Nagarjuna Sagar reservoir, the next major project downstream of Srisailam, has now entered the flood cycle, receiving 55,000 cusecs. With a full capacity of 312.05 TMC, it currently stores 156.86 TMC. The levels are expected to rise further as floodwaters increase.

Upstream in Karnataka, the Almatti and Narayanpur dams are witnessing inflows of around 1.12 lakh cusecs and nearly one lakh cusecs respectively.

Meanwhile, in the Godavari basin, the Sriramsagar Project is receiving 5,477 cusecs, while the Medigadda barrage is handling 76,600 cusecs with corresponding outflows. Central Water Commission (CWC) officials anticipate a further rise in flood flows to the Godavari basin projects in the coming week.
