The impact of the ongoing political instability in Nepal is now clearly visible on air services. Air India has canceled three flights to Kathmandu, while two IndiGo flights had to land at Lucknow Airport in an emergency. According to the information, landing of aircraft was not allowed at Tribhuvan International Airport in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu for security reasons.

Air India canceled three flights to Delhi-Kathmandu

An Air India spokesperson has confirmed that the three major flights to be conducted between Delhi and Kathmandu have been canceled on 9 September in view of the current situation. These flights include flight numbers AI2231/2232, AI2219/2220 and AI217/218.

The spokesperson said, “We are constantly monitoring the situation. Security of passengers is our first priority. As soon as the situation is normal, flights will be restored.” Passengers have been advised to keep checking their booking status with the airline website or customer care.

Indigo flights not found clearance in Kathmandu

On the other hand, private airline IndiGo also faced an uncomfortable situation. Two flights left for Kathmandu from Delhi and Mumbai were not allowed to land at Kathmandu Airport. Both these flights flight number 61157 (Delhi-Kathmandu) and 6E1157 (Mumbai-Kathmandu) were diverted to Lucknow.

The statement issued by IndiGo said that this step has been taken as a precautionary measure. “After refueling in Lucknow, both the aircraft will return to the same city from where they came flying.” At present, passengers are waiting for further information from the airline.

Tribhuvan Airport currently closed

According to media reports, Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu has been temporarily closed. Landing is not allowed to land any international flight from the local administration and air traffic control (ATC). This decision has been taken due to political tension and security reasons. This sudden decision has not only troubled the passengers, but has also affected the operation of airlines. Many international and domestic flights have been either canceled or diverted in other cities.

Check update from airline before traveling

In view of the situation, passengers are being advised to contact the concerned airline before any kind of journey and confirm the situation of flights. Both Air India and IndiGo are engaged in the process of sending updates to passengers through email and SMS. Experts believe that if the political crisis in Nepal deepens, then more flights may be affected for the next few days. In such a situation, passengers need to take additional precautions while planning.
