Fisherman Found Drowned in Assolna Paddy Field

CUNCOLIM: A 56-year-old fisherman from Assolna was found dead in a waterlogged paddy field after he failed to return home from a fishing trip, police said.

According to police, Edwin Vaz of Bainaque, Assolna had left for fishing at around 11.30 pm on June 23 but did not return home. His son, Edan Vaz, subsequently informed the police about his father’s disappearance.

During a search at Bainaque, Assolna, police found Edwin’s body submerged in water in an open paddy field. The body was recovered and identified by his son.

Police said the family informed investigators that Edwin Vaz was a chronic alcoholic and suffered from epilepsy.

Following an inquest and post-mortem examination at the South Goa District Hospital, Margao, the police surgeon certified the cause of death as “asphyxia as a result of drowning in water.”

After completion of legal formalities, the body was handed over to the family for the last rites. The enquiry is being conducted by PSI Sahil Pagui of Cuncolim Police Station.
