FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup 2026: High-flying Netherlands dent India’s semi-final hopes with 2-0 win

India’s unbeaten run at the 2026 FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup came to an end on Friday after they lost to co-hosts Netherlands 2-0 in their Pool E encounter in Amstelveen.

With six points from two matches, the Netherlands thus qualified for the semi-finals.

The Pool E encounter was part of the two teams’ second round campaigns at the FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup. Netherlands were by far the more clinical side than compared to India after they kept disturbing the Indian defenders at regular intervals.

Yibbi Jansen and Frederique Matla scored a goal apiece from penalty corners as the reigning champions controlled large portions of the contest.

Jansen gives Netherlands early advantage

The Netherlands wasted little time in putting India under pressure. Jansen opened the scoring in the second minute, after the Dutch earned their first penalty corner, giving the hosts an early advantage.

India were forced into a defensive approach for much of the opening quarter, but goalkeeper Bichu Devi helped keep the deficit to one.

She produced an important save to deny another Jansen drag-flick, while a separate Dutch effort struck the post. India’s defenders also worked hard to block passing lanes and prevent the hosts from creating a string of clear opportunities.

India did have moments going forward, but struggled to maintain possession under the Netherlands’ pressure. A penalty-corner effort from Deepika was blocked, while Navneet Kaur was unable to convert an opportunity after finding space. The Dutch continued to dictate the tempo, ensuring India rarely managed to sustain an attacking spell.

India skipper Salima Tete also came up with a close goal-scoring opportunity in the contest, but the Dutch defence line was too strong for the visitors.

Netherlands goalkeeper Anne Veenendaal, in fact, stood like a wall as the Dutch kept a second consecutive clean sheet, after having thumped Japan 9-0 in their final Pool A game a few days ago.

Matla doubles Dutch lead

India entered the second half still within touching distance, but the Netherlands remained in control. In the 38th minute, Netherlands won another penalty corner, and this time, it was Frederique Matla who doubled the hosts’ lead. All of a sudden, it looked as though India now had a mountain to climb.

The second goal made India’s task considerably tougher. The Indian side attempted to push higher up the pitch, with Sunelita Toppo creating an opportunity early in the second half, but the Netherlands goalkeeper kept out her effort.

India’s inability to retain the ball for sustained periods continued to restrict their attacking threat.

The Netherlands subsequently managed the game effectively, keeping India from generating enough pressure to find a way back.

India defended with determination, but the Dutch combination of possession, pressing and penalty-corner efficiency proved decisive.

Must-win match for India next up

The defeat to Netherlands mean that India cannot afford any more slip-ups if they are to qualify for the semi-finals. India are in fourth place in Pool E with just one point, and will face Australia in their final Pool E match on Sunday.

India have entered the must-win territory as a loss to the Hockeyroos on Sunday will end their hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals.
