Singer Fergie has marked the 20th anniversary of her debut solo album The Dutchess, describing the record as her “music baby” and reflecting on the journey that fulfilled her childhood dream of releasing a solo album.
Fergie took to Instagram to share a series of photographs from the making of the album and said she could not have imagined at the time how far The Dutchess would eventually go.
“My music baby turned 20 today. Wow. It was my dream since I was a little girl to have a solo album,” Fergie wrote.
She said the album gave her an opportunity to express different sides of her personality and explore facets of herself through music.
Fergie also reflected on the era by wearing her hair in a style inspired by that period, calling it a tribute to a particularly memorable chapter of her career. She thanked those who contributed to the album and fans who continue to celebrate its legacy.
“Happy 20th Anniversary, The Dutchess,” she wrote.
Released on September 13, 2006, The Dutchess was recorded during breaks between The Black Eyed Peas’ tour dates in 2005. The songs on the album were written over the eight years preceding its release.
Fergie had envisioned the project as an autobiographical record that would create a more intimate connection between her and listeners. The album peaked at No. 2 on the US Billboard 200 and received praise from critics for its production and Fergie’s vocals, although some reviewers criticised its lyrics and questioned whether the material fully matched her vocal ability. Over time, it came to be regarded as an influential pop album of the 2000s.
The album’s commercial success was driven by five singles. “Big Girls Don’t Cry”, “Glamorous” and “London Bridge” topped the Billboard Hot 100, while “Clumsy” and “Fergalicious” reached the top five.
With its string of successful singles, The Dutchess became one of the best-selling albums of the 2000s and established Fergie as a major solo pop artist beyond her work with The Black Eyed Peas.
