A 71-year-old woman was fined 3,200 Singapore dollars for feeding pigeons in Singapore. This action was taken due to repeated breaking of the law despite the ban.

Singapore: A Singapore court has imposed a heavy fine on a 71-year-old Indian-origin woman for feeding pigeons despite the ban. Shanmuganathan Shamla, who lives in Toa Payoh Housing Estate in Singapore, was fined 3,200 Singapore dollars (about 2,27,556 Indian rupees). This fine was imposed under Singapore’s wildlife law because it was found that he had fed pigeons nine times in six months.

Despite court warning, woman fed pigeons

The National Parks Board found that he had fed pigeons nine times in the last six months. Action was taken against him under the Singapore Wildlife Act. Earlier too, he had been fined $1,200 for the same crime. The prosecutor said that although he had promised in court not to do so again, within a month he started feeding pigeons again.

A license is required to raise pigeons in Singapore.

The court said that the accused has continuously ignored the law. The court also made it clear that considering his age, a huge amount would have to be paid as fine. Shamla appealed to the court that she did not have a job and was short of money, hence the fine should be reduced, but her application was not accepted. After this, she agreed to pay the fine amount immediately. Keeping people’s health in mind, feeding pigeons is completely prohibited in Singapore. In Singapore, under the Animals and Birds Act, a license is required to keep, breed or harbor pigeons.
