‘Mountain Man’ who made a path by cutting the mountain

Dashrath Manjhi, resident of Gehlaur village of Gaya district, known to the whole world as ‘Mountain Man’, made a path by cutting the mountain with hammer and chisel for 22 years. The path built by him is 360 feet long, 30 feet wide and 25 feet deep. It reduced the distance between Atri and Wazirganj blocks of Gaya district from 55 kilometers to just 15 kilometers.

He died in 2007 in AIIMS Hospital, Delhi. The Bihar government gave him a state honor and nominated him for the Padmashree award in 2006. In 2016, the Government of India issued a postage stamp in his honour.
