Fake Mobile Numbers: TRAI’s biggest action till date, 21 lakh fake numbers banned

TRAI has taken major action to prevent digital fraud. In the last one year, 21 lakh mobile numbers were banned and 1 lakh companies were blacklisted. TRAI has appealed to the public to report spam calls/SMS on DND app.

New Delhi: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has taken a major step to stop the increasing spam calls, fake messages and digital fraud in India. As part of the crackdown against fraud and spam calls, TRAI has permanently banned 21 lakh mobile numbers in the last one year and blacklisted around one lakh companies for continuously sending fraudulent SMS and calls. This is the biggest action so far. TRAI has appealed to the general public to not only block cyber fraudsters but also report spam calls and SMS through the official TRAI DND app.

This action has been taken especially against those callers who tried to dupe people last year by pretending to provide KYC, bank updates, fake offers and government identity documents. Also, TRAI has warned the public that just blocking a phone number will not stop these fraudsters. They will leave you but will continue calling and defrauding others.

People who are victims of fraud through phone numbers should report on TRAI DND (Do Not Disturb) app. The main reason for this big action is this reporting. TRAI investigates the activities of the complained phone number and if fraud is found, that number is blocked forever.

How to report spam calls?

To report a spam or fraud call, first download the TRAI DND app. Next, take a screenshot of the fraudulent call or SMS, select the number and submit the report.

Phone users be careful

Do not share your OTP, UPI PIN, bank details and Aadhaar information through unknown calls/chats. Do not fall for any threats or lure or click on any suspicious links.

What to do if you become a victim of cyber fraud?

If you become a victim of cyber fraud, immediately call SOS number 1930 (National Cyber Fraud Helpline). The government also allows users to report suspicious telecom activities through the ‘Chakshu’ feature.
