South Africa veteran Faf du Plessis created history in T20 cricket. Faf looked in sublime form for Joburg Super Kings against MI Capetown in a crucial game of the SA20, and played a blistering innings of 44 in 21 balls.
The knock helped Faf go past the 12000 run mark in T20 cricket. Faf became the 10th player in the world to score 12000 or more runs in the shortest format of the game. In his illustrious career, Faf has played 406 innings, scoring eight centuries and 82 fifties. Faf reached the landmark of 12000 runs after turning 41 which is astonishing because not many players play and perform at this age.
Faf du Plessis Scripts History
At 41 years and 178 days, Faf du Plessis is the oldest to reach the landmark of 12000 runs. He leapfrogged the likes of Shoaib Malik and Chris Gayle, who completed the feat in 40 years and 315 days and 39 years and 31 days respectively. Given how fit Faf is, and how well he is playing, there is certainly more runs stored in him, and he look set to continue for a few more years.

An IPL Stalwart
Faf performed well in every league he played, but his best run came in the Indian Premier League (IPL) where he played for multiple teams, including Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) while also serving as a captain for RCB. He was released by RCB ahead of the IPL 2025 auction. This year, he decided to opt out of the IPL to play in Pakistan Super League, potentially marking an end of an illustrious IPL career, where he scored 4773 runs in 154 games, including 39 fifties.
“After 14 seasons in the IPL, I’ve decided not to put my name into the auction this year. It’s a big decision, and one that comes with a lot of gratitude when I look back,” du Plessis wrote in a statement on his social media handles.
“This league has been a massive part of my journey. I’ve been lucky to play with world-class teammates, for amazing franchises, and in front of fans whose passion is like nothing else. India has given me friendships, lessons, and memories that have shaped me as a cricketer and as a person.”
