John Mathew Mukkam handed over the purse containing jewelery worth lakhs found on the road to the police. He showed honesty and returned it to the owner. This incident shared by an ASI went viral as an example of humanity.
‘The world is losing trust’ – many people say this after seeing news of hatred, violence and deception every day. But, seeing some incidents, we feel that no, this world is still not that bad to live in. Yes, a similar experience has been described in this post which is going viral on social media. This post has been shared by Janish EM, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Varappuzha Police Station, which is being appreciated a lot. Jenish told Asianet News Digital that he shared this post not with the intention of going viral, but because he felt that the world should know about the honesty of that person.
This post by Jenish is about a man named John Mathew Mukkam, who without any delay called the police station about a purse containing jewelery and checkbooks worth lakhs found on the road. When the post went viral, ASI said this…
‘As soon as he found the purse, he immediately called the police station. When the owner came, he also reached with the purse. That person said only one thing, that I would hand over this purse in front of the police station itself, so that no question would be raised if there was something missing in it tomorrow. He handed over the purse to the owner. He did not take even a single photo from his phone. He didn’t even want anyone to know about this. I said let’s take a photo. I don’t know whether he even knows that his picture and post have gone viral. I wrote this post because I felt that people should know about his good work. What he has done is an example for everyone.

Last day at noon a call came on the landline of the station. ‘Sir, I am calling from near SNDP Junction. I found a purse here on the road. It contains a checkbook and 2-3 gold ornaments. I’m going somewhere in a hurry right now. I will reach the station within half an hour. My name is John and my home is in Chirakkam. This is my number. If someone comes looking for my purse, I will immediately come to the station. There is important work so I am going.
I was wondering what kind of person he was and quickly noted down the details. After some time a couple came to the station. The woman among them was so tense that she could not even speak. When asked, the husband said, ‘This is my wife.’ While returning from the bank, her bag got torn by the scooter and her purse fell somewhere on the road. He has called me from my place of work. We searched many places but could not find it. It contained some gold jewelery and a chequebook. She is very upset, sir.’
I said, ‘Don’t worry. Your purse has been found by a very nice person. I call them. He will come with the purse. Both of them were surprised to hear this answer. Suddenly the sadness on his face changed to happiness. I immediately called the number given by that person. There was some tension in my mind that the number might not have changed. But the phone answered on the first ring and my worries went away. On giving information he said that he is reaching immediately.
After some time that person came. After verifying the count of about four and a half tola gold jewelery present in the purse, he handed over the purse along with the check book and the jewellery. I got the purse back from that kind person. I, who see numerous complaints of fraud and money swindling at the station every day, in my heart I saluted that good man who, without expecting any reward, returned someone’s lost goods worth about Rs 4.5 lakh to its rightful owner. I was also present there when the purse was being returned.
Even a 5 rupee coin fallen on the road may have tears of its original owner, a big salute to John Mathew Mukkam who has set an example for the society with such thinking. He is also the President of ‘ACTS’, a voluntary organization in Varappuzha area.
