The breakup is over, but your ex is still watching every single Instagram story of yours. Are you wondering if they want to come back or is it just plain curiosity? Psychologists say there are five hidden reasons behind this behaviour, and it is not always about regret.
Relationship Tips: The relationship has ended, you both have stopped talking, and the number is probably on the block list. But in your Instagram story viewer list, that one name pops up at the top every single day. Your ex. They might not like your pictures, but they are silently watching everything. This does not happen just with you, 80% of people go through this exact same thing.
Are you thinking they still love you? Do they want to come back? Psychologists say the reason might not always be love or regret. There is a different psychology hiding behind this.
Why does your ex stalk your Insta after a breakup?
1. Curiosity and checking ‘how are they without me’: This is the most common reason. After a breakup, people want to know if you are doing better without them or if you are suffering. This does not come from love, but to validate if their decision was right. Psychology calls this the Curiosity Gap.
2. Ego boost: If you post happy pictures, go on trips, and achieve success after the breakup, your ex sees it and wonders if you do not think about them anymore. On the other hand, if you post sad quotes, they feel they are still on your mind. In both cases, their ego gets satisfied.
3. Not fully moved on: Many times, people accept the breakup practically, but their heart does not accept it. So, keeping an eye on social media becomes a habit. Just like reading the morning newspaper, checking your profile becomes a daily routine. This is a lingering attachment, but they do not have the courage to come back.
4. Comparing with a new relationship: Even if your ex has entered a new relationship, they still watch your updates. They do this to compare you with their current boyfriend or girlfriend. They constantly compare what you are doing and if their new partner is better than you.
5. Keeping the door open (Orbiting): There is a specific term for this in psychology – Orbiting. The relationship is over, but they will not disappear completely. By watching your stories and reacting occasionally, they send a message that they are still around. They do this so that the door remains open if they want to return in the future. This is the most dangerous trap.
So, what should you do?
Psychologists say you need to stop this hide-and-seek game if you genuinely want to move on.
Do not post stories repeatedly just to prove a point to your ex because they are watching. This will only keep you stuck in the past. If you feel too uncomfortable, simply mute or restrict them. Blocking someone often feels too dramatic, but if you mute them, they will not even realize it.
Most importantly, do not look at their name on your story view list and assume they want to come back. If they really wanted to return, they would send a direct message instead of just watching stories.
So, stop feeling sad over seeing their name on the viewer list, and start focusing on your own life.
