MIAMI (AP) – Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra addressed criticism regarding the final minutes of Bam Adebayo’s historic 83-point game, emphasizing his disregard for detractors.
Spoelstra stated, “I apologize to absolutely no one,” affirming his commitment to supporting Adebayo’s pursuit of greatness during the game against the Washington Wizards, which ended in a 150-129 victory for the Heat.
Adebayo’s Historic Performance
Bam Adebayo’s 83-point achievement ranks as the second-highest single-game total in NBA history, trailing only Wilt Chamberlain’s 100 points. In the match against the Wizards, Adebayo attempted 43 shots, made 36 free throws, and set an NBA record with 43 attempts from the foul line.
The final moments of the game featured the Wizards deploying quadruple teams against Adebayo, yet he continued to receive the ball. The Heat extended the game by fouling Washington players multiple times to provide Adebayo with additional scoring chances.
Adebayo’s Perspective
Adebayo noted that he did not encounter double-teams until the fourth quarter when he had already scored 70 points. He expressed that the Wizards’ defensive strategy allowed him to capitalize on his scoring opportunity.
“I’ve got 70 with, what, nine minutes left to go in the game? You think I’m not going for it?” Adebayo stated, highlighting his determination to seize the moment. “If you are mad, I don’t care. Because a lot of people, if they did play, they never had a chance to get that close to chasing greatness.”
Spoelstra’s Defense of Adebayo
Spoelstra emphasized Adebayo’s impressive scoring throughout the game, noting his 31 points in the first quarter and 43 by halftime. He defended the decision to keep Adebayo in the game, stating, “There was a moment, and when there’s a moment in time like that, it’s carpe diem. You have to go for it, and that was just thrilling.”
Other coaches, including Tyronn Lue and David Adelman, expressed support for the Heat’s strategy, with Adelman commenting on Adebayo’s professionalism during the game.
Wizards Coach’s Reaction
Wizards coach Brian Keefe refrained from discussing the final minutes of the game, opting to focus on his team’s current performance. He stated, “We’re focused on today,” highlighting the need to move forward.
Spoelstra’s Urgency
Spoelstra revealed he had discussed the need for urgency with Adebayo prior to the game, particularly given the absence of several key players due to injuries. He noted the importance of being prepared against a team that was not competing for playoff positioning.
“I want, as our best player and team captain, for him to be locked in and ready. And, he sure was,” Spoelstra remarked.
Adebayo’s Support for Spoelstra
Spoelstra shared a personal anecdote about Adebayo’s character, recalling how Adebayo supported him during a charity event despite a recent loss. “He was there, not to run, just to support,” Spoelstra said, underscoring Adebayo’s commitment to the team and the community.
“That says enough about him as a human being. That’s why I’ll do anything for him as a competitor and as his head coach,” Spoelstra concluded.
