Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 vs Triumph Thruxton 400Triumph launched its cafe racer-styled Thruxton 400 last week in India, targeting a relatively untapped segment dominated by the Royal Enfield Continental GT 650, a twin-cylinder cafe racer priced between Rs 3.26 lakh and Rs 3.52 lakh (ex-showroom, Chennai); but, if you must have a lighter bike with more modern features and tech, the Thruxton 400 is a more affordable way to go about it. Triumph currently retails its newly launched Thruxton 400 at Rs 2.74 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Besides their pricing, the Thruxton 400 and the Continental GT 650 differ in other areas too – engine, dimensions, hardware, and features. Let’s deal with them one by one:

Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 vs Triumph Thruxton 400: Engine

The Thruxton 400 is Triumph’s fifth bike in the 400cc line-up to feature a 398cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine. The engine with a 6-speed gearbox develops 41.5bhp at 9,000rpm and 37.5Nm of peak torque at 7,500rpm – 5bhp and 14.8Nm less than the Royal Enfield Continental GT 650.

Courtesy of a larger 648cc, twin-cylinder, air-cooled engine, the Continental GT 650 produces 46.8bhp at 7,250rpm and 52.3Nm of torque at 5,150rpm. Although the GT 650 is more powerful and torquey than the Thruxton 400, it produces its peak torque earlier in the rev band. Meanwhile, Triumph’s bike features a higher-revving engine and a superior power-to-weight ratio (226bhp/tonne versus the GT 650’s 217bhp/tonne).

Considering that the Thruxton 400 has a better power-to-weight ratio, the bike is considerably lighter than the Continental GT 650. At 183kg (kerb), the Thruxton 400 weighs 31kg less. It features a 1,376mm wheelbase, 22mm shorter than the GT 650 (1,398mm). The seat height of the Triumph bike is 795mm, making it more accessible than the GT 650. The Royal Enfield bike has a seat height of 804mm.

The Thruxton 400 uses a more modern suspension setup – a USD front fork with 140mm wheel travel and a preload-adjustable rear monoshock with 130mm wheel travel. On the other hand, the Continental GT 650 makes do with a more traditional telescopic and twin-shock setup.

However, the GT 650 gets larger disc brakes (320mm front/240mm rear), whereas the Thruxton 400 brings a 300mm/230mm setup. Dual-channel ABS is standard on both. The Triumph sits on 17-inch wheels with either MRF or Apollo tyres, whereas the GT 650’s 18-inch units come wrapped in Vredestein tyres.

Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 vs Triumph Thruxton 400: Instrumentation

Instrumentation-wise, the Thruxton 400 gets a digi-analogue instrument cluster, in contrast to the GT 650’s twin-pod analogue console. The Thruxton 400 additionally offers all-LED lighting, ride-by-wire, a slip-and-assist clutch, traction control, and a USB charging port.
