Former World No. 1 Marta Marrero announced her retirement from professional padel following her round of 16 exit from the CUPRA Costa Daurada Tarragona Premier Padel P1. Playing alongside Lucía Martínez, Marrero fought valiantly but fell 6-3, 7-5 to the inspired young duo Claudia Jensen and Alejandra Alonso, receiving a standing ovation from the Tarragona crowd for a career that has helped shape the sport.
Marrero, a star player, has long been a major inspiration to youngsters due to her exploits on the international padel stage. This marked the third time in her career that Marrero announced her retirement.
After first retiring in 2020 and again in 2022 to fulfil her personal objectives, Marrero made a comeback in 2024. However, she failed to win a tournament in the Premier Padel events since her comeback in 2024, with her best performances being runner-up finishes in Spain in 2024 and 2025, respectively.
Despite the setbacks late in her career, Marrero remained a pivotal figure in professional padel and is considered one of the greatest players to have contributed to the sport’s growth and progress.
Marta has played over 400 World Padel Tour matches, of which she won close to 300, bringing her winning percentage to 74 per cent – a testament to her consistency at the top level. Marrero has accumulated 4,872 points and boasts an impressive record of 16 consecutive wins.
Known for her aggressive attacking instincts, which she inherited from her professional tennis career, Marrero brought dominance and remarkable court coverage to padel. She was equally adept at launching quick counterattacks.
She most notably qualified for the French Open at Roland Garros at the age of 17. However, she transitioned to padel a few years later and went on to claim two No. 1 WPT titles as a professional padel player.
As she bids farewell to the game, Marrero is expected to remain closely associated with the sport through her Aurial Padel Academy in Catalonia, where she recruited renowned coach Mati Ortiz last year – a step that continues to elevate padel as a professional sport in Spain.
