SV Elversberg solidified their position in the Bundesliga’s top five with an impressive 4-1 victory over Mainz on October 31. The match took place in Berlin, where Elversberg took an early lead in the seventh minute.
Philip Mwene lost control of the ball near his own penalty area, allowing Kiedel to capitalize on the opportunity. Kiedel’s shot was too much for goalkeeper Robin Zentner to handle.
The home team doubled their advantage in the 26th minute when David Mokwa advanced and set up Onika, who scored his first Bundesliga goal after getting past Paul Nebel. Mainz struggled to create consistent threats, with Lucas Petkov missing a shot wide in the 40th minute. Just before halftime, Elversberg struck again during stoppage time. Zentner failed to clear Kiedel’s corner, allowing Nadim Amiri to finish low into the net, making it 3-0.
In an attempt to change the course of the match, Mainz coach Urs Fischer made four substitutions in the 63rd minute, including the introduction of Hallback, Silvan Widmer, Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer, and Leonard Maloney. Königsdörffer managed to pull one back just three minutes later, but a video review ruled his effort offside. Zentner then prevented Mokwa from extending Elversberg’s lead in a one-on-one situation.
In stoppage time, Campbell scored the fourth goal for Elversberg before Hallback netted Mainz’s consolation goal. Mainz’s situation worsened when substitute Stephan Posch received a second yellow card, leading to his dismissal and an absence for the next league match.
Frustrated by the recent performances, Mainz’s sporting director Nico Bungert expressed disappointment. “We have not performed well recently. After a strong start to the season, our last two matches have been very disappointing,” he stated, according to Xinhua.
With this victory, Elversberg now has 13 points from eight matches, placing them fifth in the league, while Mainz remains in eighth with 10 points.
