Taking a new electricity connection in Uttar Pradesh has now become expensive by six times? Power Corporation has issued a big order that now only prepaid smart meters will be given new connections in the state. That is, every consumer will have to install a smart meter.
The cost of connection increased by six times?
- Earlier the price of 1 kW connection was Rs 1032, now it has been Rs 6166.
- The 5 kW connection has increased from Rs 7075 to Rs 15470.
Such a huge increase has made a direct impact on the pockets of consumers. Poor and middle class families say that it is no longer easy to take a new connection.

Not even approval from Regulatory Commission
The Consumer Council alleges that the Power Corporation implemented the decision without the permission of the Regulatory Commission. The council says that it is completely against transparency and is a step on the public.
Consumer council strong opposition

- Questions have also been raised on the Rs 100 crore tender for the purchase of smart meters.
The Consumer Council has alleged that no permission was obtained from the Regulatory Commission for such a huge increase. The council says that imposing additional fees on consumers without formal approval is against transparency. The Electricity Consumer Council has described this decision as a conspiracy against consumers. The council has also filed a Lok Sabha proposal in the Regulatory Commission and has demanded immediate withdrawal of the order. Along with this, questions have also been raised on the tender of Rs 100 crore released for meter purchase. The council alleges that this process is completely contrary to the rules of transparency.
