Electric Car Sales Nearly Double In September: Tata Leads, Mahindra Closes In

Electric passenger vehicle registrations jumped sharply in September 2026 with 35,048 electric cars registered during the month. That was 95.4 percent higher than the 17,932 units recorded in September 2025 and 10.3 percent above August 2026, when 31,769 EVs were registered.

Tata Motors remained comfortably in first place with 14,792 registrations and a 42.2 percent share of the electric car market. Mahindra was second with 7,782 units and a 22.2 percent share, while MG Motor was third at 5,242 units.

Together, Tata and Mahindra accounted for 22,574 electric cars, or around 64.4 percent of all electric passenger vehicle registrations during September.

Tata Crosses 14,000 Again

Tata’s September volume was 100.7 percent higher than the 7,369 units registered in the same month last year. It was also 7 percent higher than August’s 13,825 units. The company’s EV portfolio now stretches across multiple price bands, with the Tiago EV and Punch EV at the lower end and the Nexon EV, Curvv EV, Sierra EV and Harrier EV covering progressively higher segments.

Tata’s 42.2 percent September share was slightly higher than the 41.1 percent it held a year earlier. That is significant because the total EV market almost doubled over the same period. Tata therefore managed to grow roughly in line with a much larger market rather than simply relying on its earlier lead.

Mahindra’s growth was nearly as strong. Its 7,782 registrations were up 95.9 percent year-on-year and 14 percent month-on-month. The company retained a 22.2 percent market share. Its newer born-electric SUVs have given it a much larger presence in a segment where it previously depended on far smaller volumes.

MG Grows, But Loses Share

MG registered 5,242 electric cars in September, up 9.1 percent from 4,803 units a year earlier and 6.3 percent from August. The important number, however, is market share. MG’s share fell to 15 percent from 26.8 percent in September 2025 because the overall market expanded fast. More recent launches like the Hector Tomahawk EV will likely help it regain market share.

VinFast moved into fourth place with 2,964 registrations, up 32.4 percent from August’s 2,239 units. The year-on-year percentage increase looks extreme because the brand had only six registrations in September 2025. Its September 2026 share was already 8.5 percent.

Kia took fifth place with 1,263 EV registrations. That was up 111.2 percent year-on-year and 48.4 percent over August. Maruti Suzuki followed with 1,104 units, down 25 percent from 1,472 registrations in August.

BYD registered 836 EVs, up 14.2 percent year-on-year and 47.4 percent month-on-month. Hyundai recorded 792 units, almost double its year-ago number but 5.7 percent lower than August. Toyota registered 218 electric cars, while Citroen recorded 55.

The Market Is Getting Less Dependent On One Brand

The September numbers still show Tata with a substantial lead, but the market below it is now much deeper. Mahindra is above 7,700 units, MG is above 5,200, VinFast is close to 3,000, and Kia and Maruti have both crossed 1,000 registrations.

That matters because EV sales are no longer being generated by one or two models. Buyers now have electric hatchbacks, compact SUVs, midsize SUVs, large SUVs and premium models spread across a much wider price range.

Registrations should not be confused with manufacturer dispatches. These figures are based on Vahan registrations downloaded on October 2 and can be revised as more entries are recorded. Even with that limitation, September shows the scale change clearly: the electric passenger vehicle market was almost twice as large as it was a year ago.

honda zero alpha electric suv spied testing on rough roads

Honda has been running a bit late in entering the electric vehicle game. While brands like Tata and Mahindra have been selling their EVs for the last couple of years, Honda is still testing its first electric vehicle for India. It is called the 0 Alpha, and Honda has officially flagged off testing of its upcoming electric SUV in India. We have seen multiple images and videos of the EV on the internet. We have now come across a new set of images that show Honda’s upcoming 0 Alpha EV being tested on broken roads.

The images have been shared by Auto Intel India on its X profile. In this post, we can see the Honda 0 Alpha EV being driven through a broken section of the road. The images actually help us understand that Honda will be offering the EV with ample ground clearance for Indian roads. The front and rear overhangs also look relatively short on this test mule.

From the older test mule images, we have a better idea of the exterior design of the SUV. The 0 Alpha will come with a design that is different from existing Honda models. It gets a boxy design and looks similar to the concept version showcased by the company. We can see LED headlights, large black alloy wheels, a boxy rear end, an elongated side profile, and more.

It gets a stretched-out design, which gives it a station-wagon-like character. Honda, however, calls it a compact SUV. Honda is currently evaluating the 0 Alpha EV across several parameters. The first will be driving comfort, where the company will assess the handling characteristics. In addition, powertrain efficiency, battery performance, durability, overall reliability, and rough-road testing will be conducted to ensure that the vehicle can withstand harsh Indian conditions.

Honda is also working on incorporating modern features into its SUV. We expect to see a clean-looking cabin with physical buttons and other features. From the older images, it is clear that Honda will be offering the SUV with a large touchscreen infotainment system. Next to the massive touchscreen, there is also a fully digital driver display.

The steering wheel looks like a three-spoke unit, and behind it, there is probably a paddle shifter as well. This is likely to be used to control the regenerative braking in the EV.

As mentioned above, Honda will be offering a decent number of physical buttons for climate control and other functions. It looks like the 0 Alpha will come with seat ventilation for the front seats, as the buttons look similar to those seen in the Honda City facelift.

The Honda 0 Alpha will be offered with two LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery pack options. They are likely to range between 65 kWh and 75 kWh and are expected to offer an approximate real-world range of around 450–500 km on a full charge.

Honda is currently testing the upcoming EV extensively across multiple terrains. The 0 Alpha EV is an important product for Honda and is being developed for both Indian and international markets. India and Japan will be among the first markets to receive this EV. The EV is expected to debut sometime in 2027, with production expected to take place at Honda’s Tapukara plant in Rajasthan.
