Electric passenger vehicle retail sales crossed 32,900 units in July 2026, marking the strongest July on record
India’s electric car segment continued its strong growth trajectory in July 2026, with retail sales reaching 32,928 units. This was an 83.13% year-on-year (YoY) increase over 17,981 units sold in July 2025, making it the strongest July ever for electric cars. It also marked the second consecutive month with retail sales exceeding the 30,000-unit mark, although volumes eased slightly by 1.78% from the record 33,524 units retailed in June 2026.
Electric Car Sales July 2026
Tata Motors continued to dominate the electric car segment with 13,678 retail sales in July 2026, registering a strong 103.18% YoY increase over 6,732 units sold in July last year. Sales also improved 6.85% over 12,801 units retailed in June.
Mahindra retained second place with 7,742 units, recording an impressive 126.64% YoY growth compared to 3,416 unitssold a year ago. However, on a month-on-month basis, retail sales declined 5.37% from 8,181 units in June. JSW MG Motor ranked third with 5,689 units. The company was among the few major manufacturers to report a YoY decline, with sales down 3.61% from 5,902 units in July 2025. Retail volumes also slipped 8.03% compared to 6,186 units sold in June.
Maruti Suzuki retailed 1,600 units during the month. However, sales declined 20% compared to 2,000 units sold in June. VinFast India continued to build momentum with 1,482 units, registering a modest 2.35% month-on-month improvement over 1,448 units sold in June.
BYD India retailed 749 units, up 22.19% YoY, although monthly sales declined 19.11% from 926 units in June. Hyundai sold 566 electric cars, down 21.28% YoY, but improved significantly over June with a 51.34% month-on-month increase. Kia retailed 470 units, registering a strong 623.08% YoY increase aided by a low base, though sales declined 12.96%from June.
BMW Leads Luxury EV Segment
Among luxury manufacturers, BMW remained the segment leader with 369 retail sales, posting a healthy 36.67% YoYincrease. Mercedes-Benz followed with 165 units, up 43.48% over July last year.
Toyota recorded 123 retail sales of the Urban Cruiser Ebella, while Tesla retailed 115 units during the month. Citroen sold 51 units, Volvo registered 49 units, and all other manufacturers together contributed another 80 units to the month’s electric passenger vehicle sales.
Despite the slight month-on-month decline after June’s record performance, July 2026 once again highlighted the rapid pace at which India’s electric passenger vehicle market continues to expand, with established manufacturers as well as new entrants contributing to the segment’s overall growth.
