What is sago?
Most of the people eat sago during fasting but they do not even know what it is made of? Actually, sago is a starch obtained from a plant called cassava. Because cassava grows underground it is called a tuber. According to religious texts, tubers can be eaten during fasting. For this reason, sago is considered a fruit. It contains abundant amounts of carbohydrates, which provide energy to the body during fasting.

How is sago made?
The root of the cassava tree is called tapioca root. White colored pulp comes out from this root. This pulp is collected and rotted for a long time. After this, chemical flour is prepared in it. This flour is prepared in small grains i.e. sago by putting it in machines and then it is polished, so that it appears white. In this way, sago is prepared after a process of several months.
Is it right or wrong to eat Sabudana during fasting?
Scholars have different opinions regarding eating sago during fasting. Some scholars say that tubers can be eaten during fasting and sago is also made from tubers, hence it is right to eat it during fasting. Whereas some scholars are of the opinion that in the process of making sago, many micro-organisms die. Therefore it should not be used during fasting. Peethadhishwar Shri Rajendradas Ji Maharaj of Maluk Peeth located in Vrindavan also says that sago should not be eaten during the fast.
