New Delhi: Mohammed Siraj picked six wickets while Akash Deep scalped four wickets to restore some hope for India on the third day of the Edgbaston Test match. Just when things looked completely out of hand for the visitors, Siraj and Akash Deep combined together to claim remaining five wickets quickly and wrap up the England innings.
The final session of the day brought hope for India as both the bowlers took the remaining wickets in a span of just 20 runs to restrict the English side to 407 runs, trailing India’s first innings score of 587 by 180 runs. In what was a spectacular comeback, Indian team bounced back in style after losing an opportunity to inflict the follow-on the hosts.
Siraj (6/70) struck crucial blows in the first session of play, dismissing Joe Root (22) and skipper Ben Stokes (0), while Akash Deep (4/88) broke the everlasting 303-run partnership between Brook (158) and Smith (184 not out) by getting rid of the former in the final session. Akash came back to get rid of Chris Woakes for 5 runs to reduce England 395/7, before Siraj wiped out the tail, dismissing Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue and Shoaib Bashir for ducks.
