Due to severe cold in most of the districts of the state including the capital, the problem of high blood pressure is increasing, it also increases the risk of heart attack and brain stroke.

According to experts, in cold weather people drink less water than usual, due to this the blood starts thickening and the blood vessels get narrowed. This has a direct effect on blood pressure and it can become uncontrolled.

Dr. Rohit Kumar, Deputy Director of Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIC), said that consuming adequate amount of lukewarm water during the cold season fulfills the fluid requirements of the body and helps in maintaining better blood circulation.

He said that shrinkage in our arti increases in this season. In such a situation, drinking a glass of hot or lukewarm water before sleeping at night is considered helpful in reducing the risk of heart and brain related complications.

He said that high protein rich and easily digestible food should be consumed in winter, so that the body’s energy is maintained and the immunity is strengthened. Also, salt intake should not exceed five grams per day, as excess salt can increase blood pressure rapidly.

Go for a morning walk when the sun is shining

Senior Medical Officer of IGIC, Dr. Shama Rani said that there is a possibility of sudden BP shooting in this season. In such a situation, do not go for a walk in the open field in the morning, walk only when the sun comes out. If the sun is not shining then do necessary exercises and pranayam at home.

He said that regular light exercise, walking and adopting active routine also keeps blood pressure under control. Through a balanced diet, adequate water and regular physical activity, it is possible to prevent high blood pressure and its serious consequences in winter to a great extent.

Lifestyle and vigilance are the biggest protection

Dr. Gunjan Kumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Neurology, PMCH, said that brain hemorrhage (bleeding in the brain) is a serious and life-threatening condition, but with proper routine, timely check-up and caution, its risk can be reduced to a great extent.

He said that high blood pressure is the biggest cause of brain hemorrhage. Get your BP checked regularly. Take the medicines given by the doctor on time. Eat green vegetables, fruits, whole grains and low-fat diets. Avoid fried, excessive salt and processed foods.
