Early Summer in Delhi? Capital braces for unusual March heat as mercury may cross 37°C today

New Delhi: Delhi has been experiencing unusually warm weather for the past few days and the pattern is expected to continue in the coming days.

The temperature in the national capital is expected to breach 37°C on Monday, according to data from India Meteorological Department (IMD).

On Sunday, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 35.6°C — seven degrees above average. The minimum temperature was recorded at 16.7°C, which was 2.7 degrees above the seasonal average. Relative humidity stood at 90 per cent at 8.30 am. The national capital has already witnessed the hottest day in the first week of March in more than 50 years.

The IMD has predicted above average temperature throughout the week with the mercury touching 38°C on Wednesday. The sky is expected to remain partly cloudy throughout the week.

Rising heat in Uttar Pradesh

The northern state of Uttar Pradesh is also witnessing rapid rise in temperatures, with several districts already experiencing uncomfortable heat.

For the past two days, Jhansi has recorded the highest temperatures in the region. On Sunday, the maximum temperature there reached 36.2°C. Banda is also witnessing rising heat, and if the trend continues, the maximum temperature could soon approach 40°C.

Heatwave conditions in neighbouring states

In Haryana, the average maximum temperature was recorded about 6.2°C above normal, with Hisar recording the state’s highest temperature at 36.3°C.

In Uttarakhand, temperatures have also been rising steadily in Dehradun and nearby areas. The minimum temperature in Dehradun increased from 12°C to 17.8°C, nearly 6°C above normal, while the maximum temperature reached 31.5°C, about 5°C above the seasonal average.

The Meteorological Centre in Dehradun said that temperatures across both the plains and hilly regions have remained significantly above normal over the past 24 hours.
