According to religious texts, Dussehra festival is celebrated every year on the tenth day of Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month. In the year 2026, Dashami Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month will start from 12:50 pm on Tuesday, October 20 and will continue till 02:12 pm on Wednesday, October 21. Scholars say that to determine such fasts and festivals, a book named Vrat Chandrika has been published by Kashi University Banaras in the year 1952. According to him, when a date is 2 days long then the festival should be celebrated on Sunrise Vyapini Tithi i.e. the date on which sunrise occurs should be considered the best. The sunrise of Dashami Tithi of Ashwin month will be on 21st October, Wednesday, hence this date will be best for Vijayadashami.
Shardiya Navratri will last for 10 days
Dussehra festival is celebrated only after the end of Sharadiya Navratri. This time the festival of Shardiya Navratri will be celebrated not for 9 but for 10 days. According to Ujjain’s astrologer Pt. Praveen Dwivedi, in the year 2026, Shardiya Navratri will start from Sunday, October 11, and will end on Tuesday, October 20. Increasing days of Navratri is considered auspicious. This maintains prosperity in the country and the world.
