Dussehra 2025: Why did Lord Rama slaughter Laxman to take knowledge near him?

Lord Rama, Lakshmana and Ravana

Lord Rama killed Ravana on the Dashami date of the Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month. However, before the death of Ravana, the time came when Lord Rama sent his brother Lakshmana to take knowledge to Ravana. Often, there is a question in the minds of people that when Ravana was so wicked and vicious, why did Shriram send Laxman ji near him? However, there is a special reason behind it, which we will tell you in this article.

Why Ram sent Lakshmana to Ravana to take knowledge?

Lord Rama sent Lakshmana to learn knowledge from Ravana because Ravana was a scholar of Vedas and scriptures, and Rama wanted Lakshmana to learn Raj-Kaj, ethics and important lessons of life as a guru instead of the enemy. Lord Rama also respected the Great Giani, he wanted Lakshman not to see that body only from the enemy’s point of view, but also understand the light of the knowledge hidden in it.

When Lord Rama killed Ravana in battle, then Ravana’s body was lying in the battlefield. Ravana was not an ordinary demon, but he was a great Shiva devotee, extremely knowledgeable, the master and supreme of the Vedas. He had received a boon from Brahma ji and he also had knowledge of ethics, Ayurveda, codes and astrology.

Lord Ram’s order

When Ravana was lying on death in the battlefield, Rama said to Laxman:-

Guru Prachha Sustrastranam Ravanam Paramam Dwijam.

Nanya: Panditatameti like Ravanapungva:

(Described in Ramayana)

Meaning- Laxman! Go and learn something from Ravana, the knowledgeer of this great Brahmin, Vedas. He is no longer our enemy. He is now an esoter, whose policy is probably not in any other person. Laxman was amazed by the order of Lord Rama that why the demon who killed Sita, who attacked us, why to learn from what?

According to the order of Lord Rama, Lakshmana went to Ravana lying on Mrityashaiya and stood near his head. But Ravana did not say anything, after which Laxman went to Ram ji and said that Ravana remained silent. Then Rama told Lakshmana that if you are going to take knowledge, then not ‘enemy’, but consider it as ‘Guru’ and sit at his feet. Ravana was the death of death, Laxman took his final education from him and before his death, Ravana said three sentences which are still the peak of policy.

Ravana told Laxman three things

  • Good work should never be postponed.
  • As much as the bad deeds should be avoided.
  • The enemy should never be considered weak.

These three mistakes became the end of Ravana and learn these three, Laxman shown the truth of life.

Only body died with Ravana, no knowledge

Lord Rama knew that Ravana may be egoistic, but he was also a publishing scholar, policyman and Shiva devotee. It was necessary to kill him, but do not abandon his knowledge. Shri Ram killed Ravana, but not of Ravana’s experiences. By sending Lakshman to the enemy, Lord Rama gave birth to the culture of taking education from the enemy.
