West Bengal Police has arrested the victim’s male friend in connection with the rape of a medical student in Durgapur. He called the student from the hostel, took her out and raped her. Police have arrested five people so far.

MBBS Gang Rape Case: A student of a private medical college was raped on the night of 10 October in Durgapur, West Bengal. Taking major action in this case, the police has arrested the main accused. His name is in the complaint lodged by the girl’s father. The accused has been identified as the student’s male friend. He was taken into custody on Monday evening. It is alleged that he called the student out of the hostel. Took her with himself and raped her.

According to information received from police officials, the victim’s statement under Section 164 indicates that the accused raped her after she went out with him. After this he was arrested. Police have confirmed that the accused will be presented in court on Wednesday morning. Further investigation into the matter is ongoing.

Police arrested five accused

Till Tuesday, police have arrested 5 accused in this case. Police said investigation revealed that all the five accused were present at different stages of the incident. Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissioner Sunil Kumar Chaudhary said that the investigation is ongoing. The presence of all the 5 accused arrested during the investigation has been established.

“The victim’s mobile phone has been recovered. We have collected details of the clothes and physical appearance of the victim’s friend. Our team visited the spot with him and the incident was reconstructed,” Choudhary said.

He further said that based on the victim’s statement and preliminary evidence, it has been established that the medical student was sexually assaulted by only one person. “Forensic and medical reports are awaited. The role of the victim’s friend appears to be suspicious. He is under investigation,” the commissioner said.

Police denied allegations of gangrape

The police have denied the allegations of gangrape and clarified that the evidence so far confirms the involvement of a single culprit. Chaudhary further said, “As per the victim’s own statement and physical evidence, the rape was committed by the same person. We are investigating all aspects and interrogating all the arrested persons.”

The investigators have collected the clothes of one of the accused and sent them to the forensic lab. Police say further action will depend on the results of forensic and medical reports, which are still awaited.
