Former Union Minister RCP Singh’s daughter and lawyer Lata Singh has entered politics. She will contest from Prashant Kishor’s Jansuraj Party from the eighth seat of Nalanda, the stronghold of CM Nitish Kumar.
Patna: After the release of the first list of candidates of Jansuraj for Bihar Assembly elections 2025, a new name Lata Singh is in the headlines these days in the political circles of the state. Yes, this is the same Lata Singh who once used to fight for the law in the streets of the Supreme Court, is now coming out to win the hearts of the people and fight the election from Asthawan assembly seat of Nalanda. Lata Singh is a lawyer by profession, but this time her arguments will not be in the court but in front of the people of Bihar.
New in politics but very strong background
Lata Singh is no ordinary candidate. She is the daughter of former Union Minister and former JDU national president Ramchandra Prasad Singh (RCP Singh). The same RCP Singh who was once counted among the most trusted associates of Nitish Kumar. Politics has been echoing through the walls of her house, hence it can be said that Lata has not only seen but lived politics since childhood.
After completing his schooling from DPS RK Puram, Delhi, he completed his graduation from the prestigious Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) and then a law degree from Delhi University. After this he started practicing law in the Supreme Court and argued in many important cases.
Jansuraj made candidate from Asthawan seat
When Prashant Kishor’s party Jansuraj released the first list of 51 candidates, one of the names which was being discussed the most was that of Lata Singh. Lata has been given ticket from Asthawan assembly seat of Nalanda district. The same area which is considered to be the home district and stronghold of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Interestingly, there is talk of Nitish Kumar’s son Nishant Kumar also contesting elections from the same seat. If that happens, the contest will become a direct clash between the old ally versus the current regime.
From Supreme Court to the court of politics
Lata Singh’s professional journey has been extremely inspiring. She practices in the Supreme Court and understands the nuances of law. In his initial days, he took training in advocacy under the then Advocate General Lalit Kishore in Patna High Court. His elder sister Lipi Singh is an IPS officer of Bihar cadre. That means this family already knows both the administration and governance very closely. Lata Singh herself had said in an interview, “I have learned politics from my father, but I want to live politics with a new perspective. Now is the time for change.”
Questions raised on familyism and Lata’s answer
Jansuraj has always been talking about “ending familyism”. In such a situation, giving ticket to RCP Singh’s daughter has become a political irony for Prashant Kishore. But when Lata Sai was questioned on this subject, Lata Singh replied boldly, “To enter politics, you need eligibility, not lineage. If you have the ability and vision, then no one can stop you. Nepotism happens when you are ineligible and come into politics just on the basis of name.”
Father’s legacy and one’s identity
It is also no less interesting that the political relations between RCP Singh and Nitish Kumar were once very deep and today RCP’s daughter is contesting elections from the same Nalanda by taking ticket from Jansuraj where Nitish has the strongest political hold. In politics it is also being called silent revenge. Now the daughter is giving a new twist to the political distance of a father in her own way.
