Divya Gehlot, wife of Devendra Gehlot, grandson of Karnataka Governor Thawarchand Gehlot, has made serious allegations of alleged dowry harassment, domestic violence, attempt to murder and kidnapping in her in-laws’ house. According to Divya, when she reached her husband’s house in 2018, she came to know that her husband was addicted to alcohol and drugs and also had affairs with other women. Divya contacted Ratlam Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar for the safety of her 4-year-old daughter and her life. He told in his complaint that his in-laws house is situated in Nagda in Ujjain district and he has been forcibly kept there.
Did Divya really have to face dowry harassment of Rs 50 lakh?
Divya alleges that her father-in-law Jitendra Gehlot (former MLA), brother-in-law Vishal Gehlot, grandmother-in-law Anita Gehlot, and husband Devendra Gehlot continuously demanded dowry of Rs 50 lakh after marriage. Before marriage, the husband’s drinking habit, drug addiction and alleged affairs were hidden. Divya says that at the time of marriage, the marriage took place on 29 April 2018 in Taal (Alot) under the Chief Minister Kanyadaan Scheme, in which big leaders like Union Minister Thawarchand Gehlot and former Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan were also present.
Has assault and mental torture increased during pregnancy?
Divya claimed that harassment and violence increased further during pregnancy in 2021. They were repeatedly denied food, beaten, and mentally tortured. This bad behavior continued even after the birth of the daughter. A settlement was attempted in 2019, but according to Divya, “Nothing changed; things got worse.”
Was Divya thrown from the terrace and suffered serious injuries?
Divya gave details of the night of 26 January in her complaint. According to her, the husband returned home drunk and threatened, “If you don’t bring money, I will kill you.” Following this, she was allegedly pushed from the terrace, causing her to fall into the gallery below. He suffered serious injuries to his spinal cord, shoulder and waist. Immediate medical attention was not provided, and the next day he was taken to a private hospital in Nagda. Doctors declared his condition critical and referred him to Bombay Hospital, Indore.
Has Divya’s daughter been captured?
Divya’s biggest sorrow is her 4 year old daughter. She alleges that her in-laws have forcibly kept the girl with them. When she went to meet him at school in November, her husband stopped her and warned, “You cannot meet your daughter unless you bring money from your parents.” Divya said, “Only a mother can take proper care of her child. I want my daughter back.”
What steps did the police take?
Divya first contacted Ratlam SP Amit Kumar. Since most of the incidents have occurred in Nagda (Ujjain district), he was advised to submit a formal complaint to Ujjain IG and SP. Ratlam police accepted his application and sent it for further action. Former MLA Jitendra Gehlot reacted to the allegations and said, “Anyone can make allegations. I will present all the facts before the media.”
