‘Down to earth, full of life’: Aunt, neighbour remember 22-year-old UPSC aspirant raped, murdered in Delhi

New Delhi: The 22-year-old woman, who was raped and killed by a former domestic help in Kailash Hills, was very modest and humble. She was studying hard to become a civil servant like her father and was very confident about cracking the examinations, scheduled in May.

She was full of vitality

Recalling an instance, her aunt told HT that she once said: “You have been sitting in dad’s official car with a red beacon. You will soon sit in mine.” Her aunt added that the woman was full of vitality and wanted to make her parents proud.

The woman is survived by her father, a 55-year-old civil servant; her mother, a dentist; and her 25-year-old brother, who holds an MBA and is currently employed in Mumbai.

The incident that took place on Wednesday sent shockwaves across the country. In his police complaint, the victim’s father said that their worst fears had come true. The domestic help had been fired two weeks back.

Brother got engaged a few months back

A few months ago, the woman’s brother got engaged. The aunt was quoted by HT as saying that the woman was very happy about the engagement and the family was waiting for her examination to end in May so that they could begin preparations for the wedding.

Her birthday was on May 3

The aunt also said that the woman’s birthday was to be marked on May 3. She added that the woman was exceptionally “good in studies”, and set to complete an engineering degree from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. For the past year, she had been preparing hard for the UPSC examinations scheduled for May 24. “We all knew she’ll be able to crack her UPSC examination in the first attempt only,” the aunt reportedly said. The woman also gave assistance to her cousins in studies or gave them guidance, whenever required.

Another person, a neighbour and also a tenant who is in her 70s, reportedly said that the 22-year-old woman had attended the same school as her granddaughter. She added that the woman was very humble, and down to earth. The neighbour also said that she and her granddaughter went to France together for an exchange programme when they were in school.

On Wednesday, a postmortem examination carried out confirmed that the woman had been sexually assaulted and strangled.
