Dorna wants bigger Moto3 bikes; one-make championship in the works

Moto3 has had stable regulations since its inception in 2012, when it replaced the 125cc class as the entry-level category in the MotoGP paddock.

But that is expected to change in the coming years.

Dorna’s intention is to introduce higher-displacement engines, similar to what happened in Moto2 in 2019 with the arrival of Triumph. According to the promoter’s CEO, Carmelo Ezpeleta, speaking to GPOne.com, talks are ongoing:

– We want to increase the displacement of Moto3 bikes due to the higher age limit [a minimum age of 18 was introduced in 2022, with rare exceptions] and the larger stature of the riders. We are talking to different manufacturers to design new bikes.

Currently, Moto3 has two bike suppliers, Honda and KTM, with full racing prototypes. However, the future direction is expected to be a one-make championship with production-derived bikes – which would also mean lower costs for the teams.

Ezpeleta stressed that, at this stage, nothing has been decided yet, and no new rules are expected before 2028.
