A report by American news agency Associated Press has claimed that the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is considering bringing a new rule, due to which Trump and other US government officials may be banned. The reason for this is to stop the payment to WADA. According to the report, $3.6 million was to be given as funds by the US to WADA in 2024, but due to the controversy over the doping case of Chinese swimmers, the US government had stopped this fund and this dispute has been going on since then.
It has been reported in the report that this rule has been included in the agenda of the WADA Executive Committee meeting on Tuesday, March 17. According to the report, if the US government does not release the funds and the rule is passed, then the US government will be banned from participating in the 2028 Olympics, which are to be held in America only. Besides, it may also impact the Football World Cup to be held in America, Canada and Mexico in June-July 2026.
However, after this report came out, WADA issued a statement and completely rejected it. The Anti-Doping Agency said that the process of resolving the issue of blocking funds by different governments has been going on since 2020 and nothing like this is going to happen. It was also said in the statement that even if such a rule is implemented, it will not be applicable ‘retroactively’ i.e. on previously scheduled games, due to which the World Cup and Olympics 2028 will be saved from it. It was also told that any such new rule will be made only with the consent of the Foundation Board of WADA and the meeting of this board is scheduled for November 2026.
