Garuda Puran Katha: What happens to the soul after death? Does she go straight to heaven or hell, or is there any other process? We find answers to these questions in the Garuda Purana, which is one of the major texts of Hinduism.
In this, the journey after the death of the soul and the truth of Yamlok is explained in detail. According to Garuda Purana, after death the soul once again returns to Earth and then begins a long, difficult and terrible journey.
How does death begin?
According to Garuda Purana, when a person gets closer to death, his throat starts drying up, skin moisture ends and the body starts to look light. The eyes are slowly closed and the ability to listen also goes on. The person wants to say something, but his voice gets jammed. At the same time, Yamraj approaches him, which only the dying person can see him. Yamraj draws his life and takes the soul with him to Yamlok.
Why does the soul return to earth?
It is reported in the Garuda Purana that soon after death, Yamraj brings the soul again to the earth for two and a half Muhurta i.e. about 24 hours. Its purpose is to review the deeds of the person’s entire life. During this time, the soul wanders around its family. This time is considered extremely sensitive in Hinduism and this is the reason why pindadan and other activities related to death are started.
Where does the soul last till the thirteenth?
After death, the soul is given a new subtle body for 13 days, so that it can travel further. Whatever religious activities the family performs in these thirteen days, they are helpful in creating this new body of the soul. On the 13th day, the soul begins to travel towards Yamlok by wearing this subtle body. But this journey is not easy.
Millions of kilometers distance has to be done on foot
According to Garuda Purana, the distance of Yamalok has been stated to be 99 thousand Yojana i.e. about 11 lakh 99 thousand 988 km. This journey has to be done by the soul. If a person has done bad deeds in life, then this path becomes even more difficult and painful. Many obstacles and tortures have to bear him on the way.
16 terrible city of Yamlok
After reaching Yamalok, the soul has to go through 16 terrible cities, where he gets punishment or fruit according to his deeds. One who has damaged others, is strictly punished. At the same time, those who have done good deeds in life get the path of peace and liberation.
