Dialysis is a medical procedure, which is done when the kidneys are unable to remove waste and excess water from the body. Due to kidney failure, toxic substances accumulate in the blood, which increases the risk to life. In such a situation, the blood is cleaned through dialysis machine. It is of two types: hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. In hemodialysis, the machine filters the blood, whereas in peritoneal dialysis, the stomach membrane is used as a filter. This process has to be continued for a long time, so that the life of the patient can be saved and the necessary balance is maintained in the body.
dialysis Mental stress is common among patients. Frequent hospital visits, dependence on machines and physical weakness make them mentally tired. Many patients feel that their lives have now become dependent on others. This feeling can increase depression, anxiety and self-regret. Due to reduced physical energy during dialysis, problems like mood swings, lack of sleep and loss of appetite also occur. Constant treatment expenses and loss of control over daily routine also increase stress. This is why it becomes very important for dialysis patients to maintain not only physical but also mental stability.
Why is counseling important for dialysis patients?
Dr. A.K. Vishwakarma in the psychiatry department of Ghaziabad District MMG Hospital. Explains that dialysis is a long and emotionally exhausting process. In such a situation, it is very important to keep the morale of the patient strong. Counseling helps the patient to understand that this condition is not permanent and there are many ways to maintain a normal life.
Counselors teach the patient techniques for positive thinking, stress control and increasing self-confidence. This enables patients to accept their condition and cooperate better with treatment. Family members are also taught to provide emotional support during this time, so that the patient does not feel alone. Regular counseling improves patients’ mental stability, sleep and quality of life. Therefore, as important as dialysis is, mental care is also equally important.
