How much does AIIMS spend on doctor
The shortage of doctors in the country’s prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) is constantly increasing. Between 2022 and 2024, a total of 429 doctors resigned from 20 AIIMS institutions across the country. Government figures presented in Parliament show that this migration is not limited to only one institute, but has become a matter of concern for AIIMS across the country. In institutions like AIIMS, the government spends a lot of money to prepare a doctor, but still the doctors go to private hospitals outside. In this report, we will know how much AIIMS spends in preparing a doctor, what is their salary, how are the contract conditions and how many doctors are leaving every year.
Preparing MBBS doctors in AIIMS is more expensive than any other medical college in the country, because studies, research and training here are completely from government funds.
Cost estimate: It costs from ₹ 98 lakh to ₹ 1.7 crore to prepare a doctor on a 5.5 -year course. This expense is spent on studies, labs, hostels, clinical training, stipend and infrastructure facilities. If you compare, a student in a private medical college has to bear the cost of about 50 lakhs on MBBS itself, while in AIIMS it is completely from government grant.
Abroad AIIMS Heavy spending on doctors
Preparation of an MBBS student in AIIMS is about 31.31 lakhs annually by traditional method and Time Driven Activity Based Costing (TD-AbC) method costs around 98 lakhs on the entire course. Despite this, the annual fee of MBBS is only ₹ 850, which includes both hostels and tuition. Out of 2,129 students who passed from 1956 to 1997, 52.81% of the 1,477 doctors who were detected are working abroad. Experts believe that even after such a huge government cost, the country’s country is like a waste of resources.
AIIMS doctor salary
In AIIMS, the salary of doctors is fixed on the government scale, which changes according to experience and post.
* Government (AIIMS):
Junior Resident: ₹ 85,000 ₹ 1 lakh per month
Assistant Professor: ₹ 1.61.7 lakh per month
Senior Doctor: ₹ 22.5 lakh per month
* private sector:
Initially ₹ 40,000 ₹ 70,000 per month, but with the increase in experience up to ₹ 24 lakh per month.
For super specialists, it can be ₹ 510 lakh per month or even more.
It is clear that after high experience and specialization, the possibilities of earning in the private sector are far more, which is a major reason for the migration of many doctors.
Contract and conditions of AIIMS doctors
Most early recruitments in AIIMS are contract based.
Junior Resident / Demonstrator: 3 -year contract, penalty of ₹ 35 lakh on leaving in between.
Faculty post: Contract from 6 months to 2 years can be increased.
Due to these conditions, many young doctors turn to private sector or abroad before getting a permanent post, where the bonding conditions of the contract are less.
How many doctors are leaving every year?
A total of 429 doctors have left 20 AIIMS institutions between 2022 and 2024.
That is, almost more than 200 doctors are resigning every year.
Among the major reasons for the resignation, better salary, good lifestyle balance, modern facilities and abroad opportunities are prominent.
Many times, the migration of doctors from AIIMS located in rural or less developed areas has been seen more.
Effect and solution of migration
This migration of doctors is serious not only for the institute, but also for the health system of the country.
Migration effect:
Delay in treatment of patients.
Effect on medical education.
Research projects stalled
Solution,
Equal to private sector in salary and facilities.
Increasing the number of permanent posts.
Strengthen basic facilities in rural AIIMS.
Increasing the opportunities for research and international exposure.
