AIIMS app will help you
AIIMS has launched an AI based app to deal with suicides and improve the mental health of students. Dr. Nand Kumar, Professor of the Department of Psychiatry of AIIMS, Delhi, said that the Never Alone app has been created to reduce the suicide case. The aim of which is to reduce the case of depression among students and suicide should be stopped. In India, according to NCRB, 1,70,924 (in 2022 more than one lakh seventy thousand people were killed by suicide, which is the highest rate recorded in 56 years).
Launched on the occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day, this program will screen students in colleges and universities so that suicides in India can be reduced. This is a 24 × 7 working app. It is web -based that can be accessed through WhatsApp. Apart from AIIMS Delhi, the program was also launched in AIIMS Bhubaneswar and Human Institute of Human Behavior and Affiliate (IHBAS) Shahdara with the help of faculty and administration.
One suicide every 45 seconds
According to WHO data, about 727,000 people lost their lives. 1925 suicides per day, ie one suicide every 45 seconds. About 7 of these (73%) suicides took place in low-or-I and moderate-or-ICs (LMICs). In 2022, the largest stake in the suicides of young adults aged 18–30 years was 35%. This was followed by adults between the ages of 30 to 45 years, who had 32% stake in proportion to suicides.
Awareness in mental health and lack of stigma
Dr. Kumar said that there is a need for major changes in our thinking about public health approach, suicide and prevention for prevention of suicide. He said that “It is well known that 70-80 percent of people suffering from mental health problems do not get treatment (interval in treatment). An important cause of interval in treatment is lack of awareness and stigma. Apart from the availability of mental health professionals, awareness and stigma are also important reasons for not getting treatment. This is clear from the incidents of suicides in medical colleges where psychologists and psychologists are available.
