diwali muhurat trading
India is busy preparing for Diwali of 2025 and the stock market is also getting ready for its special Muhurta trading session. This time a big change has happened. After several decades the trading time has been changed from evening to afternoon. Muhurta trading is a special one-hour session that takes place every year on Diwali. ‘Muhurta’ means auspicious time, and is considered to mark the beginning of the new financial year of the Hindu calendar. During this period, BSE and NSE open their terminals, even though the market remains closed for the rest of the day. The buying and selling done in this session is real and is settled according to normal rules, but most investors consider it as a symbolic or long-term investment opportunity rather than small deals.
This year Muhurta trading will take place on Tuesday, October 21, 2025. The pre-open session will run from 1:30 pm to 1:45 pm, then the main trading session will run from 1:45 pm to 2:45 pm and the closing session will run till 3:05 pm. Earlier this session was usually held around 6 pm, but now shifting to the afternoon will bring many benefits. This will make trading easier, reduce the burden on the system and be in sync with the new clearing-settlement rules. Also, trading will become easier for those who perform Diwali rituals in the evening and this time will also be convenient for NRIs and global investors.
Keep these things in mind before investing
If you are planning for trading this Diwali, then it is important to keep some things in mind. Check your demat and trading accounts beforehand and ensure that they are active. Ask your broker about order cut-off times or registration requirements. It would be better to choose large-cap or blue-chip stocks with strong fundamentals and good liquidity. Use limit orders in this short session and avoid excessive betting or over-trading. Many experienced investors consider Muhurat trading to be symbolic, a way to start the new Samvat on a positive note and not just to make quick profits.
