Lakshmi Puja Vrat and Rituals

The first thing you need to do on Diwali is to wake up early, clean your home and start the day by paying respect to your ancestors and family deities. Since Diwali falls on Amavasya Tithi, many families also perform Shradh rituals in remembrance of their ancestors. Some devotees also follow a day-long fast that they break only after completing the evening Lakshmi Puja.

You should also decorate your home, especially with marigold flowers, Ashoka branches and banana/mango leaves. Hindu beliefs also say that placing a Mangalik Kalash (a pot filled with water and covered with a coconut) on both sides of your main door will bring good luck.

Steps For Lakshmi Puja

Place a red cloth on a raised platform and place new idols of Goddess Lakshmi (right) and Lord Ganesha (left) on the pedestal.
On the left, spread a white cloth for the Navgraha (nine planets) and make nine small rice heaps to represent them.
Fill a Kalash with water and add rice grains, a coin, and a betel nut. Cover it with mango leaves and place a coconut on top.
Prepare sixteen small heaps of wheat or flour on the red cloth for the main Puja.
Keep gold or silver coins near Goddess Lakshmi to invite prosperity.
Offer flowers, sweets, fruits, coins, and incense while reciting the Lakshmi Puja mantras.
