Surprising treasure found in Diwali cleaning
This story went viral on Reddit with the name Biggest Diwali Safai of 2025. The user who posted wrote that his mother, while cleaning the old DTH set-top box, took out bundles of Rs 2,000 notes from inside, the total value of which was Rs 2 lakh. He wrote that during Diwali cleaning, mother found old Rs 2000 notes worth Rs 2 lakh in the old DTH box. Perhaps father might have hidden them during demonetization. We haven’t told them yet. Now tell me, what to do next?
The user also posted a photo along with it in which clean bundles of notes were visible. Within a few hours, this post went viral on Reddit and people started flooding it with funny comments, questions and advice.
Funny reactions on the internet
One user wrote, God, give me such a boon that I forget to keep Rs 2 lakh!, another joked, don’t throw it away, give it to me! Someone’s trash is someone else’s treasure. One person expressed surprise, how can someone keep so much money and forget it? Many users jokingly said that the scrap dealer will take it for 8-10 rupees, then someone wrote, send me some notes, I will show them to the children after 10 years!
Can Rs 2,000 notes still be exchanged?
Some Reddit users informed that Rs 2,000 notes are still legal tender, they can only be exchanged at RBI offices for up to Rs 20,000 at a time.
One user wrote – Go to the nearby RBI office and fill the form and get it changed. These notes have not been cancelled, they have just been taken out of circulation. Just remember, exchange in small batches.
Why were Rs 2,000 notes banned?
The Rs 2,000 note was launched after demonetisation in 2016 so that cash circulation could be increased quickly. But in 2023, RBI decided to withdraw it under the clean note policy. Banks were changing these till October 7, 2023, after that exchange up to the limit of Rs 20,000 is possible only in 19 RBI offices.
