Diwali 2025: The Spiritual Significance of Applying Kajal Made from Diyas on Diwali Night

Diwali will be celebrated with full fervour on 20th October this year Devotees also worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha on this day.

However, there is another tradition that is particularly associated with Diwali night – the making of kajal.

In fact, making kajal on Diwali night is considered highly significant. Kajal is traditionally made from the flame of a diya and then applied to the eyes of all family members. But why is kajal made specifically on Diwali night? Let’s explore the reason behind this tradition.

Why is Kajal Made on Diwali?

Many households make kajal on Diwali night. For this, a diya is kept burning throughout the night. The soot that collects from the diya’s flame is used to make kajal. This kajal is then applied to the eyes of everyone in the home. In addition, it is also applied to important areas of the house, such as cupboards, safes, and cooking stoves. It is believed that this practice removes negative energy from the home and ensures peace and prosperity. Applying kajal is also thought to protect individuals from evil forces.

How to Make Kajal

First, fill a diya with oil. Then, place a cotton wick in the diya and light it. Once the diya is burning, hold a plate slightly tilted over the flame. Soot will gradually accumulate on the plate. Collect it carefully, add a drop of ghee, and the kajal is ready to use.
