What should be the number of lamps in Lakshmi puja?
Lamps are specially lit during Lakshmi Puja on Diwali. Although there is no mention in any religious text regarding their number, but scholars say that their number should be 11, 21, 31 or 51 i.e. odd. There is also a psychological side behind these numbers that in Hinduism, number 1 is seen as an omen which is a sign of growth.

According to scholars, the number of lamps in Lakshmi Puja should never be 10, 20 or 30 because the number behind them is zero which shows incompleteness and completion. In Sanatan Dharma, zero is not considered an auspicious number. Therefore, one more lamp than the number of 10 or 20 should be lit in Lakshmi Puja.
Why do we light lamps on Diwali?
It is believed that in Tretayuga, when Lord Shri Ram was returning after killing Ravana, the people of Ayodhya welcomed him by lighting lamps. Since then the tradition of lighting lamps on Diwali has been going on. According to another belief, Goddess Lakshmi should not have any problem in coming to our house on the dark night of Amavasya. That is why these lamps are lit at different places in the house.
What is the importance of lamp in Hindu religion?
In Hindu religion, every puja starts by lighting a lamp. The lamp is a symbol of light which inspires us to move from darkness to light. The lamp gives us the message that even if we ourselves keep burning, we should keep illuminating others. In the dark night of Amavasya, a small lamp teaches us to remain firm on our religion.
