Diljit Dosanjh is a name that needs no introduction today. Not just in India, the Punjabi superstar has fans across the globe. But the artist, who has created history at multiple international venues with sold-out shows, once performed at small gigs like birthday parties and weddings for just Rs 5,000. Diljit, who comes from humble beginnings, recently recalled facing financial struggles at a young age. He revealed that his family faced difficulties due to their “below-average” financial status. However, this did not stop him from turning his passion into a profession. He performed day and night before becoming a global music sensation.
Diljit Dosanjh Opens Up About Financial Struggles
revealed on a podcast, as quoted by PTI, that growing up in a financially struggling family motivated him to work relentlessly. “I came from a poor family. It was like a below-average family. If you got sick, you wouldn’t have money to go to the doctor, so don’t get sick because you don’t have money,” he said.
The star shared that after his debut album Ishq Da Uda Ada was released in the early 2000s, several people approached his music company to book him for birthday party performances. He said he accepted every offer, regardless of the amount, performing day and night because he believed it was the right path for his career.
Diljit Dosanjh On Financial Struggles
Dosanjh added that live performances soon became his biggest source of income and described the field as highly rewarding financially. He further revealed that he later stopped performing at weddings because some senior Punjabi artistes disapproved of the number of shows he was doing. Diljit wanted to follow the path of his idol, Michael Jackson and prove that Punjabi music could reach a global concert stage. While many doubted this, he decided to focus on concerts instead of wedding performances. And the rest is history!

The Partition drama marked his second collaboration with the acclaimed filmmaker after the Netflix film Amar Singh Chamkila. It initially opened to a slow start but gained momentum after its second weekend in a rare box-office turnaround. The film received immense love from audiences and witnessed a major jump in collections due to strong positive word-of-mouth.
Currently, Diljit is gearing up for the next Aura World Tour, which will start next month.
