New Delhi: India’s assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeschate gave an insight into Team India’s plans and strategy before they enforced the follow-on against West Indies on Day 3 of the ongoing 2nd Test between the two sides at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Sunday. India imposed follow-on after Kuldeep Yadav’s fifer helped them bundle out the visitors for 248 runs in their first innings, in response to the hosts’ first-innings total of 518.
India felt a strong lead of 275 runs was enough to convince them to ask West Indies to bat again as they hoped to secure another innings victory after winning the first Test of the two-match series by an innings and 140 runs in Ahmedabad. However, West Indies fought back in their second innings to derail India’s hopes of an innings victory.
Opener John Campbell and Shai Hope slammed unbeaten half-centuries to help West Indies post 173/2 at stumps on Day 3 after being asked to follow on, reducing India’s lead to 97 runs. Doeschate revealed discussions had taken place in the Indian dressing room about batting again after West Indies folded for 248 runs in their first innings. However, the hosts felt 275 was a solid lead.
“Yeah, there was a discussion to bat, obviously. Those last two wickets took a little bit longer than we would have hoped for, and it probably started going towards the fact where you do look to bat again, but we felt 275 was a good lead,” said Ten Doeschate.
