The demise of veteran actor Dharmendra on November 24 sent shockwaves across the Indian film industry. Fondly remembered as the “He-Man of Bollywood,” the legendary star passed away at the age of 89, leaving behind a towering legacy that spanned decades.
Now, more than a month later, one of his most loved films, Yamla Pagla Deewana (2011), is reportedly set to return to cinemas as a tribute to the iconic actor.
According to a source close to Bollywood Hungama, the re-release has been planned to honour Dharmendra’s immense contribution to Indian cinema and his enduring appeal across generations. The source said, “The re-release of Yamla Pagla Deewana will serve as a tribute to the man who was unanimously loved and who left an indelible mark in the world of cinema. The film seems apt for a re-run as it’s not very old, still looks fresh and entertaining and also stars Dharmendra along with his two sons, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol.”
The 2011 comedy-drama holds a special place among fans, not just for its humour but also for bringing together Dharmendra with Sunny and Bobby Deol in a full-fledged family entertainer. Over the years, the film has continued to enjoy strong recall value through television reruns and digital platforms.
The source further revealed that the re-release date has undergone a change due to current box office dynamics. “Earlier, the plan was to re-release Yamla Pagla Deewana this Friday, December 19. But due to the Dhurandhar wave, NH Studioz, which holds the rights to the film, has decided to change the plan. Yamla Pagla Deewana is now expected to arrive in cinemas on January 1, 2026. A final decision will be taken in a few days from now,” the source added.
Directed by Samir Karnik, Yamla Pagla Deewana derives its title from the iconic song Main Jat Yamla Pagla Deewana from Dharmendra’s 1975 film Pratigya. A remixed version of the track featured in the 2011 film and went on to become a chartbuster. The story revolves around an Indian man living in Canada who travels to Banaras in search of his estranged father and brother. The trio then head to Punjab, where a string of comedic situations unfolds as they attempt to help the younger brother win over the woman he loves while navigating her eccentric family.
