Religious importance of Dhanu Sankranti
Sun’s zodiac change: On this day, Sun God Devguru enters Jupiter’s zodiac sign ‘Sagittarius’. This change in the zodiac sign of the Sun is celebrated as a big religious festival.
Beginning of Kharmas: With the entry of the Sun into Sagittarius, Dhanurmas (also known as Kharmas) begins, which continues till Makar Sankranti. Except religious functions, all auspicious functions like marriage, mundan, house warming are considered prohibited during this entire month. However, in this month the importance of pilgrimage, bathing, charity, chanting and penance increases manifold. Worship of Lord Vishnu and Sun God gives special results during this period.
Worship rituals and donations on the day of Dhanu Sankranti
Holy Bath: It is considered very auspicious to take bath in any holy river like Ganga, Yamuna or any other lake on the day of Dhanu Sankranti. If it is not possible to go to the river, then mix Ganga water in water and take bath at home.
Worship of Sun God:
After bathing, offer Arghya to the rising Sun God. While offering Arghya, mix red flowers, roli and some jaggery in water and chant the mantra ‘Om Suryay Namah’.
