Who is Ravana’s brother, who is worshiped on Dhanteras?
On Dhanteras, Lord Kuber is worshiped who is the brother of Ravana. You will be surprised to hear this but it is true. Kuber was born from the first wife of sage Vishrava, Idvida, and Ravana, Vibhishana, Kumbhakarna and Shurpanakha were born from the second wife, Kaikasi. In this way Kuber was the half brother of Ravana, the king of demons. This is the reason why Ravana is called Brahmin.

Why do we worship Kubera on Dhanteras?
It is believed that Kuber pleased Brahmadev by doing severe penance. When Brahmadev appeared, he asked Kuber to seek a boon. Kuber asked for the boon of becoming Dikpal. Brahmadev made Kuber the ruler of the north direction and the lord of the north direction. After this, Goddess Lakshmi was also pleased and blessed him to be the protector of wealth. Kuber is worshiped on Dhanteras because he is the protector of wealth.
Who was Kuber in his previous birth?
The story of Kuber’s previous birth is found in Shiva Mahapuran. According to him, Kuber was a thief in his previous birth. One day they stole and hid in a Shiva temple. Since it was dark, he lit his clothes there to provide light. Considering this as his worship, Lord Shiva gave him the boon of becoming rich in the next life.
Kuber was the king of Lanka
According to Valmiki Ramayana, before Ravana, Kubera had control over Lanka. When Ravana set out to conquer the world, he attacked his own brother Kuber. Kubera was no match for Ravana’s powers and he had to leave Lanka. Only after this Ravana came to rule over Lanka. Ravana had also snatched Pushpak Viman from Kuber.
Pandavas also stayed in Kuber’s palace
There is a story of Kuberdev in Mahabharata also. According to him, one day during his exile, Bhima reached Gandhamadan mountain. There was a city named Alkapuri of Kuberdev. When Kuberdev’s soldiers saw a man there, they attacked Bhima. Bhima killed everyone. When Kuberdev came to know about this, he became very angry, but his anger calmed down after seeing Yudhishthir. Pandavas spent that night in Kuber’s palace.
