Story of Dhanteras (Dhanteras Ki Katha)

According to the legend, once Lord Vishnu felt like going on a journey on earth. When Lord Vishnu started coming to the earth, Mother Lakshmi said that she too would go to the earth with him. On this, Lord Vishnu told the mother that if she wanted to come with him to the earth, then she would have to obey him. Only then can she travel with him on earth.

Mother Lakshmi said yes to this, after which Lord Vishnu told Mother Lakshmi that she can come with him to the earth. Then after Lord Vishnu and Mother Lakshmi came to earth, Shri Hari desired to go towards the south. Then God asked Goddess Lakshmi to stay there. After this Shri Hari moved towards the south. However, Mother Lakshmi secretly followed God.

While walking, Goddess Lakshmi saw a mustard field. She stopped there and adorned herself with mustard flowers growing in the farmer’s field and drank sugarcane juice. While doing this, Lord Vishnu saw him. Lord Vishnu got angry because of Mother Lakshmi’s disobedience. Then in anger he cursed Goddess Lakshmi. Lord Vishnu cursed Goddess Lakshmi that she would live with a farmer for 12 years.

Due to Goddess Lakshmi’s stay at the farmer’s house, his house was filled with wealth and grains. Meanwhile, 12 years passed and the time came for the mother to go back to her world. When Lord Vishnu came to take his mother, the farmer refused to bid him farewell. Then Mother Lakshmi asked the farmer to clean the house properly on Teras and light a ghee lamp.

Mother also asked the farmer to fill an urn with money and worship her in the evening. Mother Lakshmi told the farmer that if he did this, her blessings would remain on him throughout the year. The farmer did as his mother said. With the blessings of the mother, the farmer’s house remained full of wealth and grains throughout the year. According to religious beliefs, the tradition of worshiping the Goddess of Wealth on the day of Teras has been going on since then.
