Bengaluru: A retired staffer of the Indian Space Research Organisation has been taken into custody for allegedly murdering his wife at their apartment in the city, police officials confirmed on Wednesday.
The accused, Nagesh Ishwar Rao, was arrested after the body of his wife, Sandhya Shri, was discovered at their home in the Virtuoso apartment complex located in Bommanahalli in Whitefield. Authorities said the incident came to light earlier in the day, prompting immediate police action, Times of India reported.
Alleged strangulation inside flat
According to investigators, Rao is suspected of strangling his wife inside their residence. Police teams reached the apartment after receiving information about the incident and subsequently detained him for questioning.
A senior officer said that Rao was reportedly undergoing treatment for depression and had been facing emotional distress for some time.
Anxiety over wife’s future
During preliminary interrogation, Rao allegedly told police that he had been worried about what would happen to his wife if he were to die first. Officers said he appeared anxious and emotionally unstable.
“He was reportedly undergoing treatment for depression and was distressed. He allegedly intended to take his life after the incident, which is why he attacked his wife. There appear to be no other major reasons,” said Saidulu Adavath, Deputy Commissioner of Police Whitefield.
Police said there were no immediate indications of other motives behind the crime, though further investigation is underway.
Daughter informed in US
The couple’s daughter, who resides in the United States, has been informed about the tragedy. Police said necessary legal procedures are being followed and further details will emerge after the post-mortem and detailed inquiry.
The investigation is ongoing.
