Bharat Ratna Demand for Shibu Soren: A historic resolution was unanimously passed during the monsoon session of the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly, demanding the former Chief Minister of the state and the late Dishom Guru Shibu Soren of the Jharkhand movement to be honored with Bharat Ratna. This proposal was introduced by Minister Deepak Birua in the House. He described Shibu Soren as a visionary person who fought for the rights of tribals, indigenous people, farmers and exploited classes. Birua said that the entire life of Dishom Guru has been devoted to fulfilling social justice, democratic values and public aspirations. He played an important role in providing a separate state and identity to Jharkhand.
The minister said that Shibu Soren was not only a leader, but a idea and a movement, whose tireless struggle and sacrifice gave Jharkhand its proper place. He breathed his last on 4 August 2025 and now in his honor, the demand for giving him Bharat Ratna will be a true tribute to the people of Jharkhand.
Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi supported the proposal
During the discussion on this proposal, Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi also supported it, but at the same time he suggested that two more prominent leaders of the Jharkhand movement – Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda and Vinod Bihari Mahato – should also be included in the proposal. He said that these two leaders have been associated with the soul of Jharkhand and their contribution should also be recognized at the national level.
No tribal got Bharat Ratna after independence
It was also mentioned in the proposal that even after 78 years of independence, no tribal has received Bharat Ratna, while the contribution of tribal society in freedom struggle and social movements has been very important. The Minister of Parliamentary Affairs suggested that this historical injustice should be abolished and the contribution of tribal society should get national honor. Chief Minister Hemant Soren was also present in the House. Congress MLA Pradeep Yadav also added suggestions in the proposal that the statues of Shibu Soren as well as martyr Sido-Kanhu and Babasaheb Ambedkar should also be installed in the assembly premises, so that the coming generations can take inspiration from these great personalities.
